Aleksandra Kaczmarska

Age: 27

Sex: male

Date: 13 May 2008

Place: Dewstow Street, Newport

Aleksandra Kaczmarska was found stabbed in the heart at her flat in Dewstow Street, Newport on 13 May 2008.

She had been stabbed once in the chest, near to the heart, resulting in her lung being punctured.

Her husband was tried for her murder but acquitted.

He said that her wound had been self-inflicted and that he only realised something was wrong after she had trouble breathing after they made love.

When she was found, her wedding ring was found discarded under a table.

They had married in December 2007 after having first met ten weeks earlier.

Aleksandra Kaczmarska had been out with her husband and her twin sister earlier on in the evening to celebrate their birthday.

Her sister was initially arrested on suspicion of her murder but released without charge.

The court heard that after Aleksandra Kaczmarska's sister heard that her sister was dying that she went to her flat to try and see her and screamed and hit her head against a wall deliberately after which she took an overdose of tablets. She said , 'I didn't really want to kill myself it was just my reaction to hearing Alex was dying. We went back to Dewstow Street and I was distraught trying to get in to see Alex. I was screaming and shouting and hit my head against the wall a few times deliberately. I was distraught'.

Aleksandra Kaczmarska's sister said that Aleksandra Kaczmarska had got to the point where she had 'had enough of everything, and thought she might have stabbed herself as a 'cry for help', adding that she didn't think that her husband would have harmed her. She said that Aleksandra Kaczmarska had been her own worst enemy when she was drinking.

She said, 'Alex was crying out for help. She didn't like the way the relationship was going, with her husband's jealousy. She was very different towards the end. Despite any jealousy, I thought her husband was incapable of harming her. He loved her, absolutely loved her, but unfortunately she was unmanageable and if she carried on like that he would have left her. I think they both loved each other, but because of their issues, the marriage was doomed'.

The court heard that Aleksandra Kaczmarska and her sister had fought earlier in the night before she died and had to be restrained.

It was also heard that Aleksandra Kaczmarska's husband had told a friend shortly before Aleksandra Kaczmarska’s death he was fed up with her behaviour and was intending to leave her.

Her husband had been a valeter for Motor Valet, in Bridge Road. He denied killing Aleksandra Kaczmarska and said that they had loved each other and had been trying for a baby.

He added that he had seen her making a stabbing motion with a knife in her right hand.

In November 2008 the police appealed for a teenage girl, aged 16 to 17 years old who was seen in CCTV walking along Corporation Road with a man at about 2am to come forward, stating that she might have witnessed the murder. However, it’s not clear whether she was found or how she might have witnessed the murder.

The girl was said to have called herself Kelly and was described as:

  • White.
  • Slim build.
  • Shoulder length straight dark hair which, at the time, was tied back in a ponytail.
  • Wearing a hooded top jacket, zipped half way up, with a white top underneath and blue jeans.
  • She had long painted nails with white tips and wore gold earrings with a 'K' inside.
