Melvin Hillier

Age: 52

Sex: male

Date: 21 Mar 2013

Place: The Tower Centre, Alvescot Road, Carterton

Melvin Hillier died from head-injuries and it was later determined that he was unlawfully killed.

He had previously been a successful businessman but had a serious road accident in 2003 that left him with mobility problems. Following that he began drinking heavily.

On the evening of 20 March 2013, he had been drinking and had suffered a broken nose, a black eye and an injury to his head and stayed with a friend in The Tower Centre on Alvescot Road in Carterton for the night. However, he was found to be dead the following morning, Thursday 21 March 2013.

Two men and a woman were arrested on suspicion of his murder but were released later without charge.

The Coroner said that he was confident that Melvin Hillier had been punched and that he was confident that that was the cause of his death. Witnesses at the inquest also said that they had seen him being punched.

His cause of death was due to bleed on the brain following a blunt impact to the head and it was noted that he had been three-and-a-half times over the legal alcohol limit for driving when he died.

Melvin Hillier was described as a larger than life character who was kind and generous.
