Florence Amy Gatenby

Age: 31

Sex: female

Date: 19 Jun 1940

Place: London and North-Eastern Railway Company, Peter Street, Manchester

Florence Amy Gatenby was found dead at the foot of a stairwell at an office building of the London and North-Eastern Railway Company in Peter Street, Manchester.

No one saw her fall.

Screams were heard shortly before she was found.

She was a shorthand typist and had lived on Liverpool Road in Cadishead.

When she was found, her note book and pencil were near her and she had very severe head injuries.

She was still alive when she was found and she was taken to hospital but died within a few minutes of arriving.

It was determined that the distance from the top floor where the woman's rest room was situated, to the bottom of the staircase where she was fund was nearly 70 feet.

At her inquest, it was heard that she had recovered from a nervous breakdown six months earlier and that she had had no love affairs and was not worried as far as anyone knew.

When the coroner examined her shoes, he found several curious scratches on the soles.

An open verdict was returned at her inquest.
