Age: 0

Sex: female

Date: 21 Dec 1940

Place: River Derwent, Derby

The body of a newly-born female child was found on the bank of the River Derwent at Derby.

The body was found wrapped up in a parcel on the river bank between the weir and the Long Bridge by a man that had lived in Bath Street, Derby.

The body was decomposed and wrapped up in sacking and a piece of mackintosh and part of an apron, tied up with several yards of tape.

It was thought that the body had been in the river for some time and that it had been washed down the river.

A doctor said that the child's death was due to asphyxia, but that he could not say whether it was due to suffocation or drowning.
