Date: 19 Mar 1940

Place: Egerton Street, Hulme, Manchester

Walter Walber died following a fight in Egerton Street in Hulme, on the night of Tuesday 19 March 1940 at about 11pm.

It was said that Walter Walber died from a wound to the back of his head.

A 19-year-old seaman on leave was tried for his manslaughter but acquitted.

The seaman said that a man that had been with Walter Walber came up to him and said, 'I don't like sailors' and then struck him. The seaman said that he then struck the man and that the man then ran away. The seaman said that Walter Walber then came up to him with his fists up. He said however, that he didn't know whether he hit Walter Walber or just caught his shoulder and pushed him away but said that Walter Walber fell into the roadway. He said that he didn't think that Walter Walber was hurt and so he went home.

Walter Walber was later found unconscious in the street and was taken to the Royal Infirmary where he died a few hours later.

After Walter Walber died, the police told the press that they were interested in speaking to a sailor, two civilians and anyone else who might have seen Walter Walber and his friend that night around 11pm.

The seaman later went to the police and made a voluntary statement after he read an announcement in a newspaper.

Walter Walber was a motor driver and had lived in Ellesmere Street, Moss Side and was married with three children.
