Walter Fryatt

Walter Fryatt died after a man threw a jug at his head.

A 24-year-old clerk was tried for his manslaughter at the Old Bailey but acquitted.

Walter Fryatt was a publican and it was said that the clerk and his friends had been talking loudly and making a nuisance of themselves in his pub and that when Walter Fryatt had remonstrated with them the clerk had flung a jug at him that had hit him on the head.

Walter Fryatt died some days later from fatty degeneration of the heart and the medical evidence stated that his death was accelerated by the blow from the jug.

At the trial the clerk said that Walter Fryatt had refused to serve him and his friends and that he had lost his temper but had not intended to hurt Walter Fryatt.

When the judge discharged the clerk he told him that he was a lucky man.
