Thomas Rowland

Thomas Rowland died after a scuffle in Walworth Road in Lambeth.

A man was tried for his manslaughter but was acquitted.

Thomas Rowland was a policeman attached to the Rodney Road Police Station and had approached a group of rowdy young men who had been dancing around an organ on Walworth Road and attempted to take one of them into custody. The man that was tried for his manslaughter was said to have interfered and Thomas Rowland was later found dying in the street.

It was claimed that the man had struck Thomas Rowland, but the man denied it.

The post-mortem revealed that Thomas Rowland had had an unusually brittle and thein skull and the pathologist that examined him said that if his skull had not been so thin that the fall might not have killed him.

The jury at the Old Bailey where the man was tried found the man not guilty without leaving the box.
