A skeleton wearing woman’s clothing was found in a sack in a house at Brookside Cottages in Nutbourne.

The skeleton was found after the woman that lived there was taken to an institution and asked a neighbour to go and look after her cats. When the woman went to her cottage, she found the sack and informed the police.

The house was described as a semi-detached situated in a lonely lane leading to a creek that was once the haunt of smugglers.

The woman that had lived there had been taken to the institution on the Monday 19 February 1940 and the body was found on the Thursday 22 February 1940.

It was reported that according to the electoral list, three people had been living at the address in the last year, the woman, a man and the aunt of the woman that had gone into the institution.

The woman that had lived in the house said that she was the widow of a Scotland Yard detective-inspector who had formerly owned a cafe in Portsmouth.
