Jamar Walker was stabbed whilst walking along Raglan Road near The Puffing Billy Pub and Cape Hill Medical Centre at about 2.20am on Sunday 20 December 2015.
Four people were arrested during the investigation, and one youth was charged with murder but there were no further developments.
Jamar Walker died from a stab wound to his upper leg.
Another 17-year-old youth was also stabbed in the back during the assault but later recovered.
The police said that there had been a fracas involving Jamar Walker and his friends and another group. They said that Raglan Road would have been busy with people at the time and appealed for other witnesses to come forward.
Jamar Walker had lived in Handsworth having recently moved from London as he did not feel safe there.
