Gary Hutchings was shot near his flat in Camden Walk, Islington, at about 1am on 4 June 1983.

A man was charged with his murder in 1996 but the charges were dropped before the trial. THe man had been sentenced to 159 years in 1988 for a series of shootings and was suspected in the murders of Frank Moody and David Foley.

It was claimed that the man had marked Gary Hutchings for murder because he had had an affair with the man's wife.

At the time of the murder the police said they were hunting for two men and were questioning another man.

Gary Hutchings had been shot with a shitgun at close range near his flat. It was heard that he had earlier on been involved in a pub row.

It was later claimed that the man initially charged with his murder had shot him becuase he had been having an affair with his wife and that he had waited for him outside his flat at 1am and shot him as he was fumbling with his keys to get in. The man was said to have stated that he had hidden in some bushes and to have then stepped out when Gary Hutchings arrived and shot him in the head with a .45 revolver. He was alleged to have told a Daily Mirror reporter that before shooting him he raised his mask so that Gary Hutchings could see his face.

The man was alleged to have said:

I put my mask back onb afterwards. I let him see me and then I put it back on.

The man charged later killed himself on 16 March 2019 in HMP Wormwood Scrubs.
