Che Keng Fung

Age: 68

Sex: male

Date: 13 Aug 1986

Place: Sussex Way, Holloway

Che Keng Fung was stabbed and tortured at his home in Sussex Way, Holloway.

He was found dead in the hallway of his house by his son.

£100, some jewellery  and a number of luncheon vouchers were stolen.

The stolen jewellery included:

  • 3 jade pendants.
  • Dragon and phoenix bracelet.
  • Wedding ring.
  • Gold chain.

The jewellery was described as being distinctive oriental jewellery.

It was noted that the bracelet was ordinarily an item that would be given to a bride before her wedding, with the figures representing harmony and good fortune.

It was also noted that about 4,500 luncheon vouchers of various denominations were stolen, all of which had been marked in one of two ways, either with two parallel lines across or a Z.

Che Fung had been a restaurateur. He was initially named as Reno Che Fung in the press.

He had lived in Sussex Way, just off the Seven Sister's Road in Holloway with his son, having relocated to England from the United States the year before where he had jointly run a restaurant in Brooklyn, New York, selling up his share before leaving.

However, he had lived all across the world, including China, Hong Kong and Jamaica.

It was said that selling up his restaurant had left him money for retirement and that he still had plans to travel before settling down.

He was described as a quiet and private man with few friends or interests outside his family. However, he was described, at 66, as being a fit man and to have liked walking to keep fit.

On the morning of Monday 11 August 1986 he left his home to walk to Kentish Town, two miles away, where his son had a fish and chip shop in Fortis Road, the Sun Do, and other members of his family had been.

He stayed at the shop until closing time, just after lunch at about 2.30pm, when he left with his son to go back to their house in Sussex Way to have their own lunch. During lunch he told his son that he might go to Hong Kong to see his brother towards the end of the year.

At about 4.45pm the son left to go back to the shop, noting that his father seemed happy and at ease.

Che Fung was described as having loved reading and gardening and was last seen in his back garden at 6.50pm cutting back some ivy.

It was thought that he had spent the evening quietly in the house. A light was seen on in a downstairs room where he normally watched TV.

It was noted that by morning the TV was switched off.

It was also noted that he had had an evening meal and done the washing up.

However, the lights in the house stayed on all night.

It was thought that at least two people had got into the house between 9pm and 11pm and killed him and then stolen the money and jewellery.

They stabbed, battered and tortured Che Fung to death. He was described as having been trussed up and beaten around the head before being left to die in the hallway.

The police said that they thought that the killers, who would have been bloodstained, had then left the house and turned right towards Seven Sister's Road, which was described as a busy thoroughfare. It was noted that as they would have turned into Seven Sister's Road that there was a Safeway's Supermarket and opposite that a busy bus stop and they appealed for people that had either been shopping, or catching a bus that might have seen some bloodstained men walking by to contact them. It was also noted that there were also three pubs, nearby along Seven Sister's Road,  the Enkel Arms by Hornsey Road, the Junction pub and the Nags Head at the junction with Holloway Road, and they similarly asked that drinkers that saw anything notable to come forward.

It was noted that his murder took place a month before that of 61-year-old Thomas Walker who was also murdered in his home in Caledonian Road, Islington, and whose murder is similarly unsolved. They had both been tied up, beaten and robbed.
