Amy Alice Marsden

Age: 26

Sex: female

Date: 31 Dec 1909

Place: Canal, Co-operative Wharf, Nottingham Road, Derby

Amy Alice Marsden was found in a canal near the Co-operative Wharf off Nottingham Road in Derby.

Amy Marsden had had a situation as a barmaid in Manchester at her sister's wine bar, Hoggarth's Wine Bar at 25 and 27 Oxford Road and had come to Derby on 22 November 1909 to see her parents. She had been working at the wine bar for between six and seven years.

Her brother said that she had not been very well recently but that there was nothing serious the matter. He said that when she visited them on 22 November 1909, she seemed much more cheerful than usual and had been laughing and joking.

The brother said that the following morning after her arrival on 23 November 1909, Amy Marsden went out saying that she was going to Litchurch Post Office in Osmaston Road to post two post-cards. However, she didn't return and was not seen again.

The post-cards, which had been posted, had been to her sweetheart and to her sister in Manchester and were found to contain nothing but friendly greetings and statements to the fact that she would be returning to Manchester the following day.

When her body was found in the canal it was in a very decomposed state. Her death was stated as being due to drowning.

An open verdict of found drowned was returned.

She had lived at 1 Barrow Street in Derby.
