Barbara Liddle

Age: 76

Sex: female

Date: 28 Sep 2017

Place: Camp Road, St Albans, Hertfordshire

Barbara Liddle was knocked over on Camp Road on 28 September 2017 by a car that didn't stop.

The police said that they thought that the car that hit her was a black Vauxhall Zafira taxi.

She had been waiting in Camp Road at about 8.20pm to be picked up by a friend so that she could go and play darts when she decided to cross the road and wait by the Orchard Nursing Home. However, as she did so she was hit by a car that had come along from the roundabout travelling westward.

The car didn't stop and left the scene and was never traced.

Barbara Liddle was found in the road unconscious soon after and the police and an ambulance were said to have arrived at the scene within four minutes of her being hit.

However, she had fatal injuries to her face, body and limbs and died at the scene.

At her inquest a witness said that they had heard a large crashing sound followed by a car door slamming shut.

When the police gave evidence they said, 'We managed to establish that there were five vehicles that drove through that area at that time. Detailed CCTV footage helped us to examine what type of vehicle it was that hit Mrs Liddle and we managed to identify it as a black Vauxhall Zafira B model. We believe it to be a taxi but we have exhausted all local enquiries with these companies'.

It was heard that other witnesses said that they had seen something like a green sign on the side of the car that looked similar to a taxi rank and the police noted that it could well be that the taxi had come from another area.

CCTV footage was found that showed that the suspects’ vehicle had not been driven recklessly or speeding before it hit Barbara Liddle and it was said that it had braked and swerved to try and miss her. The footage had also shown that the vehicles headlights had moved over onto the bushes in front of the nursing home from the road at the time.

The police noted that the road had been dimly lit at the time and the weather was dry.

A toxicology report showed that there was no alcohol or other substances in Barbara Liddle's blood at the time she died and she was otherwise described as having been healthy and fit before her death.

Her inquest concluded that she died from a road traffic collision.
