John Daly was knocked down by a car on the West Derby Road, Liverpool on 11 January 1942 during a black-out.
It was said that the driver of the car had stopped and got out to look, but that he had then got back in his car and driven off. A man that saw the driver said, 'The driver got out of his car, looking very agitated, and said, 'It was not my fault, I could not see him. He came from nowhere and I ran into him'. He then got back into his car and drove away. He did not give me his name or address'.
The police said that they made all efforts to trace the driver, including broadcasting appeals, but failed to find him.
The coroner said, 'It is difficult to understand the mentality of such a person as the driver who, not thinking he was at fault, could be so callous. No doubt the driver will feel that his attitude was not that of a humane man'.
An open verdict was returned.
John Daly had lived in Norwood Grove on the West Derby Road.
