Allen Edward Bourner was run over in Farleigh Hungerford.
He had been a sergeant in the Royal Corps of Signals.
A saloon car was identified as having been involved. The driver said that he had pulled round a car and felt the wheels touch something and that when he got out, he saw Allen Bourner in the road.
However, the police said that they examined his saloon car and found no sign of a mark or a collision.
A Regimental Sergeant-Major said that he had been at a dance with Allen Bourner earlier on and had asked him to leave as he thought that he had been under the influence of drink.
