Peter Miller was found dead in his kitchen in Camden Place, Great Yarmouth on 9 December 1984.
He was found by his brother at 7.45pm. He was last seen earlier in the afternoon by a neighbour when he helped her with some repairs.
He had been stabbed once in the chest. The murder weapon was never found.
Family members that found him noted that they smelt a strange smell in the air in the house when they went in.
His brother was originally arrested over the murder but soon after released.
A number of other arrests were made, but no one was charged.
A witness said that they saw a man with blonde hair in Camden Place around the time of the murder.
A CS canister was found at the scene and it was thought that it had been used either by Peter Miller or his murderer. The can of cs spray was actually handed into the investigation two months after the murder, having been found on the floor of his home.
A woman rang Great Yarmouth police station on the morning of Sunday, 30 December 1984, saying that she had information about the case, but she didn't leave any contact details, stating that she wanted to speak to a female officer about the case, but didn't say any more and an appeal was made for her to call back.
It was noted that over the years, about 170 case exhibits were either destroyed, returned or lost. His brother later said that the loss of the exhibits made any forensic breakthroughs unlikely and that as a result justice had been 'stolen' from his family. Missing items included the can of CS spray found at the scene.
A sharp instrument was later recovered following fresh information in 2013.
Peter Miller's brother said that he thought that the answer to what happened lay locally.
