George W Gardiner was shot as he went to the assistance of a woman that was being held up at Kilburn and Brondesbury Metropolitan Station in London.
He was shot at about 12.30am on Sunday 13 December 1942. It was said that he had surprised two men that had broken into the booking office where the woman was, and that they had then fired three shots at him. It was said that after shooting him they ran off into the blackout.
The woman being held up was a booking clerk whilst George Gardiner was a station foreman.
George Gardiner had lived in Kenilworth Road in Kilburn and had a wife and a son.
