Hursch Moses Weinstock

Age: 59

Sex: male

Date: 23 Dec 1942

Place: Ludlow Way, Finchley, London

Hursch Moses Weinstock was attacked near his home in East Finchley on the night of Monday 21 December 1942 and died in hospital on 23 December 1942.

He was a Hatton Garden jeweller and it was thought that he had been robbed of about £1,000 worth of diamonds.

He died from severe head injuries.

Scotland Yard said that they thought that two men were involved in his murder.

His inquest on 18 May 1943 returned a verdict of murder by some person or persons unknown.

He was attacked shortly after 6pm on 21 December 1942 and was found lying on the pavement near his home with a fractured skull caused by a blow.

It was heard that Hursch Weinstock had been in the habit of carrying about £3,000 worth of diamonds with him in a wallet in his inside waistcoat pocket. When he was found his wallet was missing.

After he was found he was taken to the hospital where it was found that he had suffered from a fractured skull and that he had a laceration to the brain and an operation was carried out to remove a bone splinter. Although the operation was a success, he had a relapse and died.

It was said that his assailants could well have been involved in a large number of other crimes across London.

It was noted that the robbery was carried out at 6pm when people would have been listening to their radios behind their black-out windows, in the dark.
