The body of a newly born female child was found in a field at the back of Wilfred Street, Boldon Colliery.
The police said that they were called to a field at the back of Wilfred Street in Boldon Colliery at about 1.15pm on the Monday 4 January 1943 where they saw the body of the child wrapped up in a light blue blouse, a towel and some brown paper.
A doctor that examined the child said that he thought that it had been alive from birth for between 8 and 18 hours.
The coroner said, 'This child died due to negligence and exposure caused by a person or persons unknown'.
