Date: 18 Oct 1942

Place: Shropshire Union Canal Main Line, City Road Bridge, Chester

The body of a newly born male child was found in the Shropshire Union Canal Main Line at the City Road bridge in Chester.

The child was discovered by an apprentice plumber who said that he was near the City Road bridge when he saw two boys throwing things at what he thought was a fish but said that he later found that it was the body of a newly born child.

The pathologist that carried out the post-mortem said that the child had been born alive and said that there was evidence of violence being inflicted before death. He said that he thought that the evidence indicated that the child was dead before it was put into the water.

He said that the child’s death was due to a fractured skull.

However, the coroner said that there was not enough evidence to show how the injuries were received and an open verdict was returned.
