Jennie Shepherd

Age: 68

Sex: female

Date: 8 Mar 1942

Place: Watling Street, Nuneaton

Jennie Shepherd was run over on the Watling Street near the Ashby turn.

She was found at 1am on the Sunday morning, 8 March 1942 and it was thought that she had been run over on the road earlier on 7 March 1942 around 11.20pm.

She was found lying on the pavement with her handbag beside her as though it had been placed there.

A stationary car was also seen near the scene at about 11.20pm and the police appealed for its owners to come forward.

Her inquest heard that it was apparent that she had been knocked down by a heavy motor vehicle.

She had lived in Lytham St Annes in Lancashire and had been going to see her son in Coventry but missed her connection at Nuneaton and appeared to have tried to walk the rest of the way.

It was heard that she had left home in Lytham St Annes at about 2.30pm to visit her son who lived in Humber Road, Coventry, by train. However, her train, which should have arrived at Nuneaton at 6.30pm, was late, and so she missed her connection and it was thought that she had then tried to walk the rest of the way but had headed off in the wrong direction.

Her son met the train at Coventry, but said that she was not on it.

Jennie Shepherd was seen to leave Nuneaton railway station at about 10pm and head off towards Watling Street. However, it was noted that the direction that she had gone off in was in the opposite direction to Coventry.

It was thought that she had been knocked over by a heavy vehicle and to have then been run over by a second vehicle.
