The body of a man was found on the towing path of the Grand Union Canal near Old Oak Common Lane in Hammersmith.
He was said to have been about 75 years of age, about 5ft 6in tall, with a stout build, with a scar at the side of his left eye and an old wound on the side of his nose.
He had been dressed in a blue serge suit with a fawn raincoat and black felt hat, a grey pullover and a black tie with white stripes.
Property that was found on him included a tin of dental powder and an eye-shield.
