Florence Paul

Age: 28

Sex: female

Date: 8 Jul 1943

Place: 121 St Olafs Road, Fulham, London

Florence Paul died from an abortion.

She died in Fulham Hospital on 8 July 1943.

Her husband had been a private in the Devon Regiment and had been serving since 1941. He said that they had two children already and that he knew that she was in a certain condition.

They had lived at 121 St Olafs Road in Fulham, London.

The pathologist that carried out the post-mortem said that there was no natural disease to account for her death and that she had recently been pregnant but that the pregnancy had been terminated completely by an abortion. However, he added that there was no evidence of interference of any kind and nothing to distinguish it from a natural abortion.

He said that the abortion had been followed by an infection that had spread into her bloodstream which had then resulted in gas gangrene.

At her inquest, the coroner asked the pathologist whether the organism, or infection, might have been introduced by an instrument before the abortion and the pathologist replied, 'Yes'.

The pathologist agreed that her abortion might or might not have been natural.

The verdict of the inquest, which was opened at Hammersmith Coroner's Court on Monday 12 July 1943 and was due to resume on 19 July 1943 is not known.
