Jude Gayle was stabbed in an alley off Dunelm Grove near his home in West Norwood on the evening of 24 September 2017.
Three men, aged 23, 30 and 35, were tried for his murder at the Old Bailey but were acquitted.
He had been at home preparing Sunday lunch, a mackerel dish, with his mother shortly before and had gone out in his car to a local corner shop, which was a three minute walk away, at the junction of Dunbar Street and Norwood High Street to get some things including a bottle of ketchup and a lollipop for his young daughter. He had lived on the Dunelm Estate.
The police were called to the alleyway at 5.39pm and an air ambulance was called out and he was treated at the scene, but he died there at 6.42pm.
His cause of death was given as being due to incised wounds. He had been repeatedly stabbed.
Jude Gayle had been a personal trainer and had a daughter and unknown to him had been due another child, a boy, by his girlfriend who had not told him she was pregnant at the time. The son was born eight months after his death.
