The body of a newly-born female child was found in the Shropshire Union Canal at Chester.

It was found in Chemistry Lock off Tarvin Road wrapped up in a piece of flannelette and brown paper and put in a brown paper carrier bag that had the name Owen Owens on it.

The pathologist said that he thought the child’s death had taken place about a week earlier. He said that the child was a newly-born and that it had had a separate existence and that he thought that it had died from lack of attention at birth.

The child's body was found 300 yards from the Cheshire county area, and as the flow of the canal was generally from that direction, the police said that they thought that it could well have drifted into the lock from the country area.

An open verdict was returned.
