Edward John Walker was found unconscious with severe head injuries on his ship on Monday 12 June 1944 and was taken to Bootle General Hospital but died later that same day.
He was a chief steward on the ship, was single, and had lived at 3 Beulah Crescent in Thornton Heath, Surrey.
His cause of death was given as being due to shock and haemorrhage following a compound fracture of the skull.
The coroner said that there was insufficient evidence to show under what circumstances he sustained his injuries and an open verdict was returned.
