Thomas Cox was knocked down on a pedestrian crossing by a vehicle that didn't stop.
He had been crossing Eastgate at a pedestrian crossing at about 6am on Monday 15 January 1945.
It was thought that he had been hit by a heavy vehicle carrying girders.
An open verdict was returned at his inquest.
He had lived in Devon Street, Pontefract Lane.
