Ethel Maud Hapgood

Age: 28

Sex: female

Date: 11 Nov 1916

Place: 31 Sheffield Road, Fratton, Portsmouth

Ethel Maud Hapgood died from septic peritonitis following a suspected instrumental abortion.

A doctor said that her death might have resulted from natural causes or having been set up by an instrument.

At her inquest, allegations were made against certain women. One of the women admitted giving her pills but said that they were of a harmless nature and denied giving Ethel Hapgood an instrument or using one on her.

The other woman, Ethel Hapgood's daughter, also denied having used an instrument on Ethel Hapgood and said that allegations made by two other women had been invented.

However, the coroner noted that there was nothing more than suspicion and an open verdict was returned.

Ethel Hapgood was the wife of a draughtsman at HM Dockyard.
