Catherine Fergusson Barr died from gas poisoning.
Her mother was tried for her murder but acquitted after the judge said that here was not enough evidence to show that she had turned the gas on deliberatly.
It was claimed that her mother had stuffed the chimney with newspapers, some dated 2 January, filled the keyhole with newspaper and lowered the chandalier and turned on two gas jets fully to gas herself and her three children, resulting in the death of Catherine Barr
