Kevin Fox

Age: 41

Sex: male

Date: 4 Jul 1992

Place: Memory Lane Pub, 244 Barking Road, Plaistow

Kevin Fox was shot with his own pistol in the Memory Lane pub at 244 Barking Road in Plaistow on the night of Saturday, 4 July 1992.

He was said to have opened fire in the pub, shooting two men, seriously wounding the landlord's son, after which he was over-powered and shot dead with his own pistol.

After he was overpowered he was stabbed, kicked and beaten over the head with a fire extinguisher before he was finished off with a single shot.

It was thought that he had gone to the pub to settle a feud.

He was found lying outside the pub on the pavement and then taken to hospital where he died from head and chest injuries.

Three other men were found injured by the police in the pub, two of them suffering from gunshot wounds to the stomach and the third a stab wound to the leg.

Following the incident, the police arrested seven men and four women. However, it was said that whilst it was thought that dozens of drinkers had been in the pub at the time and had witnessed the shooting, that when the police arrived there had been just eight people there. It was said that when the police arrived there were scores of abandoned glasses standing on the blood-spattered bar.

It was noted that the murder weapons had been smuggled out.

A veil of silence was said to have been drawn over the shooting by the local community, with one detective saying, 'It looks as though this inquiry is going to take us a bit of time. Nobody is talking at the moment'. Another detective said, 'This was justice East End-style', whilst another said, 'Threats had been made in the past and trouble was expected by those connected with the pub'.

Kevin Fox was said to have been a criminal and the police said that one theory considered him as the perpetrator of the attack.

The Memory Lane pub was said to have previously been a notorious haunt for junkies and drug pushers, but that the new landlord had managed to change that and it was said that drugs were not thought to have been involved in the shooting, with a Scotland Yard spokesman saying, 'We believe it was a local feud'.

Kevin Fox had lived in Lillechurch Road in Dagenham.

The Memory Lane pub has since shut and the premises are now used as housing.
