Date: 3 Aug 2005
Lucy Hargreaves was killed when three masked men broke into her home on 3 August 2005.
She was shot and set on fire. She had been asleep on the sofa at the time whilst her partner and children were upstairs. After shooting her they had dowsed her in petrol and set her alight.
Two people were tried but acquitted.
It was thought that her partner was the target of the attack. He escaped out of an upstairs window with their youngest child. At the trial the prosecution said that the murder, which had targeted her partner, was in retaliation for when her partner had been in a stolen car in 1993 that had hit and killed a 4-year-old boy. However, the police said that it was likely that the killers would have known that they were standing over the wrong person from the moment that they burst into the home.
The gunmen were said to have got away in a Lexus.
Two men were tried but their cases were dropped after it was heard that there was no case to answer.
Another suspect was said to have fled to Spain and possibly on to America. The man that had fled to Spain was also wanted in connection for the of Liam Kelly who was killed in June 2004.
