Clifford Coby

Age: 26

Sex: male

Date: 10 Aug 2005

Place: Red Lion Pub, 71 Ilford Hill, Ilford

Clifford Coby was shot in the Red Lion Pub in Ilford on 10 August 2005.

The main suspect in his murder was later shot dead in Soufriere, St Lucia, in 2008.

Clifford Coby had been shot twice in the pub following an argument and pronounced dead at the scene. There had been a barbecue in the rear garden of the pub at the time and many people had been present, including mothers and children.

The argument broke out after a woman had cue balls thrown at her head. The argument then grew as more people became involved after which Clifford Coby was shot.

The woman involved in the argument was also shot in the arm and Clifford Coby's friend was shot in the head, but they both survived.

The argument was recorded on CCTV that covered the beer garden.

During their investigation the police questioned over 50 people and handed out posters and leaflets.

The police said that they were interested in tracing anyone that had been in the pub after 7pm on 10 August 2005.

However, it was noted that it was thought that there had been about 100 people at the pub at the time, with some of them never being traced.

The man that shot Clifford Coby was described as:

  • Black.
  • Mid 20s.

He was said to have been in the company of at least two other black men of a similar age and they were all said to have left the pub after the shooting and to have gone off down Ilford Hill towards Cranbrook Road.

However, it was thought that the gunman was himself later shot in St Lucia in the Caribbean, on 6 June 2008. He had been a 24-year-old van driver known to have at the time frequented Ilford and Barking.

Clifford Coby had had four children and had lived in Canning Town.

He was described as mixed-race and Ghanaian origin.
