Edward Donnelly went missing in Fynway, Sacriston, and is thought to have been murdered.
He had gone missing in 2002 and in 2005 the police made three arrests in relation to his murder but there are no known charges, trials or convictions.
He was last seen on 25 March 2002 near the Red Lion pub in Plawsworth on the A167 between Chester-le-Street and Durham.
In March 2005, the police arrested a man at a house in Elm Street, Sacriston and pulled up the carpets and floor boards searching for evidence. However, the man they arrested died of natural causes soon after.
Later in June 2005 the police searched over 100 disused mineshafts in the Sacriston and Plawsworth area and then in August 2005 they dug up an old air raid shelter in Acornclose Lane, Sacriston looking for his body.
By November 2005 the police had arrested five people but they were all released without charge.
Edward Donnelly had worked down Sacriston Pit and lived with his sister. He was described as a quiet and unassuming person.
