Clive Enkel

Age: 53

Sex: male

Date: 25 Sep 2008

Place: Alderwood Drive, Abridge, Loughton

Clive Enkel was attacked in his garden and died two days later in hospital on 25 September 2008.

It was thought that he was attacked by five masked men who had been offering gardening services.

Clive Enkel had lived with his 89-year-old father and mother in Alderwood Drive, Abridge.

The men had forced their way into his home and attacked him with baseball bats. They had smashed through the front door and then chased him upstairs to his bedroom where they attacked him.

He had been at home watching television at the time, around 7.50pm, when the men broke through his front door. When the men burst in Clive Enkel's father escaped into a field at the back of the house.

Two men were seen running out of his house after the attack with another man seen standing guard outside with a baseball bat and another man at the wheel of a stolen BMW car. The BMW car was later found dumped at a nearby sewage works.

After the attack Clive Enkel was taken to hospital where he was put on a life support machine, however, it was switched off two days later after it was found that he was brain dead.

It was reported that a gang of men had been going round touting for business and that they had called at his home and cut a tree down and then robbed him after which they came back and attacked him with the baseball bats.

A person said, 'I heard they had done some work for him and then came back and rifled through his stuff. They warned him if he called the police they would come back and get him'.

A neighbour said, 'We heard that travellers had done some work in the garden and there may have been some dispute over the price. They are thought to have come back with baseball bats'.

The police appealed for anyone that had had a knock at their door from the men to come forward.

Clive Enkel was described as a recluse and a quiet person that kept himself to himself. He was said to have lived at home with his parents, caring for them, in the family home that they had lived in for the previous fifty years.

His inquest, which concluded in January 2012 found that he had been unlawfully killed.
