Dennis Hurley was knocked down during a scuffle in Stratford, London on 1 October 1962 and died in hospital five days later.

A 42-year-old man was tried for his manslaughter at the Old Bailey but acquitted.

It was heard that Dennis Hurley had had an abnormally thin skull. The 42-year-old man was said to have struck Dennis Hurley during an argument, causing him to fall down.

The 42-year-old man had been the chairman of the Stratford, branch of the Transport and General Workers Union.

Dennis Hurley was Irish and had been a tanker driver and had lived in a flat in Junction Road, Romford with his wife, a 41-year-old office worker. They had no children. They were described as a devoted couple.

It was heard that there had been a meeting of the Transport and General Workers Union members at Pickford’s transport depot in Marshgate Lane, Stratford, which had been called because some drivers had been complaining about new time schedules for long-distance run from a depot at Stanford-le-Hope, Essex. It was heard that some men started jeering when they objected to the way that a union official wanted to handle the dispute and that there was then a scuffle and Dennis Hurley fell to the ground, hitting his head and fracturing his skull.

He died in hospital on 6 October 1962. He arrived at Queen Mary Hospital unconscious and remained in a coma until he died.

Detectives and his wife had waited at his bedside since the Monday in case he regained consciousness.
