The body of a newly born child was found wrapped up in a parcel by a ship's fireman who had been out looking for mushrooms in the grounds of Hurlingham Club on 4 October 1906.
He said that when he first saw the parcel he thought that it might have been some old clothes and secured it, but that he then found that it contained the body of a child.
The child had been wrapped up in some newspaper that was dated 9 September 1906 and two sheets of brown paper, one of which had come from the Army and Navy Stores. However, the address on it had been obliterated, although the word 'club' was still visible.
The child's death was stated as being due to want of attention and an open verdict was returned.
