Valentin Kachanov

Age: 27

Sex: male

Date: 7 May 2019

Place: Thames Estuary, Grays, Essex

Valentin Kachanov was found dead in the River Thames on 7 May 2019, three months after he vanished.

He was last seen near Lakeside Shopping Centre on 8 February 2019 at about 10am and also called his mother on that day at about 7.40pm.

In May 2019 the police said that they were treating his disappearance as a murder case. A detective said, 'It is absolutely out of character for Valentin to not contact his family for such a long period of time and although I remain open minded I am now treating his disappearance as a murder enquiry. We’re continuing to try and build a picture of the circumstances and reasons for his disappearance, and are carrying out extensive enquiries to help us find out what has happened to him'.

They appealed for anyone with CCTV footage in the London Road area between 6pm and 9pm on the evening of Friday 8 February 2019 to come forward.

Valentin Kachanov was found in the Thames Estuary at Grays near to Wouldham Road at about 1pm on 7 May 2019.

A 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder at the time but he was later eliminated from the enquiry and it was heard that his cause of death could not be determined.

It was noted that there were no signs of violence or defensive injuries.

It was thought that he had entered the water within hours of calling his mother.

An open conclusion was returned. However, a detective said that Valentin Kachanov could have fallen victim to crime by persons unknown to him, but that there was no evidence of that nor of any intent to take his own life.

Valentin Kachanov was from Bulgaria.
