Nedim Bilgin

Age: 17

Sex: male

Date: 29 Jan 2019

Place: Caledonian Road, Islington, London

Nedim Bilgin was stabbed in Caledonian Road, Islington on 29 January 2019.

He was stabbed multiple times with a Rambo-style knife near the junction with Tilloch Street at about 6.49pm. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 7.15pm. He was stabbed at the junction with Tilloch Street, near the Euro Cafe and Kennedy's pub and collapsed in front of a retail unit a few doors down.

After he was stabbed he had tried to stagger into a shop before collapsing on the pavement. A witness that saw him after he was stabbed said that he heard him saying, 'My chest, my chest', before collapsing. He said that he tried to attend to him before the ambulance arrived and got covered in his blood.

He had been stabbed during a fight. It was said that a row had broken out after some robbers tried to steal his bike. However, the police said that they thought that the row over the bike was a red-herring and that his murder was gang related.

Nedim Bilgin had been wearing a bicycle helmet at the time.

Two knives were later recovered from the scene.

It had been raining at the time.

Three youths were arrested shortly after. They were:

  1. 16-year-old.
  2. 17-year-old.
  3. 18-year-old.

However, no one was charged with his murder.

A report was later written detailing key events in his life up to his murder and it was noted that he had been seen by his secondary school, St Mary Magdalene Academy, as a 'problem child', and moved to an 'alternative provision', due to his behaviour, but that he had only attended for two weeks and then stopped going altogether.

At about the same time he had been involved with the Copenhagen Youth Project in Copenhagen Street but in April 2018 he was arrested following an affray outside the club with members of a rival gang involving knives and weapons and as part of his bail conditions he was barred from attending the youth centre or having contact with a number of other people that he had known.

The report stated that, 'From this point he became more active and prominent in local criminal activity, delivering or dealing drugs and in more open conflict with members of rival groups'. It was also thought that he had been being groomed to become involved in a county lines drug network and noted that he later went missing on Christmas Day 2018, presumably in connection with the county lines drug network.

However, he returned to his home two weeks later in January 2019 but was killed two weeks after that.

Following his murder Nedim Bilgin's body was covered with a sheet and the pavement area cordoned off, but his parents arrived soon after at the scene and his father was photographed breaking through the police tape to get to his son's body.

Nedim Bilgin had lived a few hundred yards away in Islington.
