George Henry Arthur Newbury Lovell

Age: 33

Sex: male

Date: 4 Jan 1949

Place: Tickford Street, Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire

George Henry Arthur Newbury Lovell was knocked over by a lorry whilst he was cycling.

He was a farmworker and had lived in Priory Street in Newport Pagnell.

A smallholder that lived in London Road, Newport Pagnell, said that he had been walking home from work at 5pm on 4 January 1949 when he saw George Lovell and had a chat with him. He said that George Lovell had been returning from his work on a bicycle and had pulled into the footpath on his proper side of the road when he stopped to chat with him. He said that George Lovell had remained on his bicycle with his left foot on the pathway and his right foot on the pedal.

He said, 'We remained in conversation about three minutes. When I saw a heavy lorry coming towards us from the direction of London, and had no sooner said, 'Look out, George', than Lovell was knocked from his bicycle by the lorry'. He added that there were three lorries but that he was unable to say whether the leading one had had lights.

He said that he shouted to the lorry-driver to stop but said that he didn't. He added that he also called to the drivers of the following vehicles but that they also took no notice of him.

After hearing the evidence, the jury said that they could not find a verdict of accidental death, and returned an open verdict stating that that would allow the case to be re-opened if the police got evidence to warrant such a step.
