The mummified body of a baby was found in a case at a house in Cemetery Road in Swinton.
It was found by a man who lived in the house wrapped up in cloth and laid on straw and locked inside a wickerwork basket. He said that the case had belonged to his wife who had died in January 1948.
It was thought that it had been dead for several years.
The man said that he married his wife in 1938 and had served in the forces for six years. He said that he had had a number of leaves apart from three years whilst in Africa.
His wife's sister said that her sister had never intimated to her at any time that she had been pregnant.
An open verdict was returned.
