The body of a newly born female child was found in a sack in Ticknall Lane.

It was found by a woman from Bromley Street in Derby who had stopped her car in Ticknall Lane, described as a lonely lane, to exercise her dogs. She said that she then found the naked body of the child lying wrapped up in sacking behind a bush.

She said that her dogs went off from her and that when she called them, they would not return and that when she went over to them, she found that they were behind a bush sniffing at a bundle of sacking. She said that when she then looked closer, she saw a small leg and foot sticking out of the sacking.

The police said that when they attended the scene, they found that the child was laying face down with its head buried in women's underwear and sacking and that nearby there was a piece of newspaper dated 21 December 1947.

The doctor that examined the child said that he thought that it had been born some days before it was found.

At the inquest on 12 January 1948, the coroner recorded the verdict that the child 'died from want of attention at birth'. The coroner noted that there appeared to be no violence.

The police said that they had made attempts to trace the child’s mother but without success.
