John William Barraclough

Age: 69

Sex: male

Date: 29 Sep 1949

Place: Peel Street, Tyersal, Bradford

John William Barraclough was knocked down by a car.

He was found lying in Peel Street in Tyersal on Wednesday 29 September 1949 suffering from head and other injuries and taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary but was found to be dead on arrival.

The police said that they thought that he had been knocked down by a car or some other vehicle and that the driver of the vehicle might not have been aware that they had hit anyone because there had been a dense fog at the time.

The police made an appeal, but no one came forward.

The appeal read: 'At 5.30am today (Wednesday), John William Barraclough aged 69, of 49 Dudley Street, Tyersal, was found lying in the middle of the road in Peel Street, Tyersal. He was suffering from head and other injuries and was dead on arrival at Bradford Royal Infirmary. The injuries are believed to have been caused by his being knocked down by a motor car or other vehicle, the driver of which may not be aware of the accident owing to the dense fog which prevailed at the time. Any driver of a vehicle who was in Peel Street, or any person who may be able to give information about the accident, which occurred between 5am and 6am, is asked to communicate with the Chief Constable, Bradford City Police (Tel, No. Bradford 23422), or any police officer'.

An open verdict was returned.
