John Steele Appleton was found dead on the moors.
An open verdict was recorded as there was insufficient evidence to come to the conclusion that he committed suicide.
He was a chief foundry clerk and had lived in Victoria Avenue East in Higher Blackley, Manchester.
He had left home on 16 August 1949 and his skeleton was found on Saturday 7 January 1950 on the moors at Piethorn near Newhey, Rochdale.
His wife said that he was highly strung and had suffered from nervous debility.
His doctor said that he had ordered him to get plenty of fresh air.
