Baby

Age: 4 days

Sex: male

Date: 10 Aug 1905

Place: Sneyd Green, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire

A newly born child was found wrapped up in newspaper at Sneyd Green on Tuesday morning, 8 August 1905.

The child was still alive and was cared for for a short while by the police before being taken to Chell Workhouse where it died on Thursday 17 August 1905.

The child was found by a man that had been out with his father and another man at Sneyd Green looking for mushrooms. He said that as they proceeded along Sneyd Green they heard a peculiar cry and that in going towards the sound they discovered the baby wrapped up in a copy of the Sentinel, published on 4 August 1905.

The child had been lying in the bottom of a hedge.

They then took it to the police station.

After arriving at the police station and woman was called out to attended to the child who said that after she washed it that she found that it had received absolutely no attention since birth. She said that she first thought that the child was only a few hours old, but later came to the conclusion that it was several days old.

An open verdict was returned.
