Stephen Sweeney was found dead at his furniture factory on the Stoneygate Industrial Estate in Felling on 8 July 1998.

He had been shot multiple times.

He was found dead at his desk by his partner and 7-year-old daughter on the night of 8 July 1998 shortly after 9pm. Stephen Sweeney had been working late but when he didn't come home his wife went to look for him.

He was last seen alive by his colleagues at 5.10pm.

He was murdered on the night of the football World Cup semi-final between France and Croatia.

He had run Tonegate Ltd, which traded as Cascade Upholstery and had a warehouse on the Stoneygate Industrial Estate.

Four people were arrested following his murder but were later released without charge.

The police said that they thought that his murderer was known to Stephen Sweeney.

They also said that their investigation into Stephen Sweeney's background revealed shady dealings and said that his company was in financial difficulties. They said that his firm, Tonegate Ltd, had been liquidated and that its last filed accounts in 1996 showed that it owed £25,000 in VAT and £74,000 to other creditors.

The police also said that during their investigations they uncovered a number of other serious offences. In one case a man was jailed for three years for arson and in another three men and a woman were charged with importing drugs.
