George Mather

Age: 28

Sex: male

Date: 22 Aug 1905

Place: Pallion, Sunderland

George Mather died following a fight.

It was said that he had gone out and partaken in a drunken orgy until early Sunday morning and had then returned home and got a poker and had then left again saying that he was going to fight someone.

He was said to have then returned shortly after and to have exclaimed, 'I am done', and to have then immediately fallen down dead. He had had a knife with him when he got home, but there were no bloodstains on it.

It was first thought that he had committed suicide.

He had three wounds in his chest and the doctors said that they were of the opinion that they could not have been self-inflicted.

It was said that George Mather and a number of other young fellows had for some time past been in the habit of purchasing drink and carrying it into some fields where, night after night, disgraceful orgies were indulged in. It was said that the revellings had continued far into the morning and that as a result complaints on the part of the nearby residents had been made and that the police had frequently broken up the bacchanalian gatherings.

It was said that it was after one of these gatherings on the Monday night that George Mather had attended that he had gone home and got his poker and then returned with his injuries.
