Place: Arnold, Nottinghamshire

The body of a newly-born male child was found in the hedgerow of a clover field in Arnold at 9.30am on Saturday 23 September 1950.

The pathologist that examined the child's body said, 'I am satisfied that the child had a separate existence from its mother and that death was due to suffocation at or immediately following birth by drowning'.

The pathologist said that there were no signs of physical violence and that the child might have been drowned in the birth process.

An open verdict was returned stating that 'the child was found dead, the cause of death being suffocation by drowning, there being no evidence to show how or by what method the child drowned'.
