George Ireland Orman was found dead in Dalkeith Road near Priestfield Road in Edinburgh at 3.35am on Sunday 1 January 1950.
A 31-year-old man was arrested on a charge of murdering him, a charge that was later reduced to culpable homicide, but at the Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Wednesday 5 April 1950 a verdict of 'not proven' was returned on a charge of assault. He was said to have struck George Orman when he tried to separate two women who were fighting in the street.
He had been visiting his wife’s-parents in Dalkeith Road with whom he had intended to stay the night. Shortly before he was found he had left his wife's parents house to exercise his dog and it was thought that he had come across two women and two men that had been fighting who were accompanied by another woman that had been carrying a young child. It was thought that George Orman had then attempted to intervene between the two men and was knocked down.
He was found suffering from head injuries in the street and taken to the Royal Infirmary but died on the way.
George Orman was a distillery worker and had lived in Yeaman Place in Edinburgh.
