Mona Crowe

Age: 55

Sex: female

Date: 1 Sep 1985

Place: Arbroath

Mona Crowe died after falling over a 100 foot cliff on 1 September 1985.

Her husband was convicted of her murder but his conviction was later quashed after it was heard that the judge had misdirected the jury.

It was said that he had pushed her off the cliff between Arbroath and Auchmithie. However, he denied having pushed her off the cliff. He said, 'I did not murder my wife. I did not push her over the cliffs. I slapped my wife's face and she stumbled and fell. I tried to grab hold of her, but she was beyond my reach'.

When the police first investigated Mona Crowe's death, they concluded that there were no suspicious circumstances. However, it was later determined in 1987 that he had been writing letters to a woman in the Philippines before his wife died who he married soon after.

A coastguard that examined the place where Mona Crowe fell said that there was a puddle there but that there was sufficient room to walk round it without going too far towards the edge. He said, 'I wouldn't jump towards a cliff and I doubt if I would clear that in one leap'.

Mona Crowe and her husband had lived in Strathbeg Place in Broughty Ferry, Dundee.
