John Henry Hayes

Age: 53

Sex: male

Date: 10 Aug 1951

Place: Peterstone, South Wales

John Henry Hayes was found dead under a seawall with head injuries at Peterstone between Cardiff and Newport by the Bristol Channel.

It was initially reported that foul play had not been ruled out.

He was a colliery surface worker and had lived in Bright Street, Crosskeys near Newport.

He was found dead with head injuries at the bottom of a 12-foot sea wall between Newport and Cardiff on Friday 10 August 1951.

A doctor said that John Hayes's face, head and temple were extensively bruised and that his injuries were not consistent with a fall from a 12-foot wall.

However, the police said that they did not think that he had received his injuries from another person and said that they thought that he had fallen and injured himself whilst on the beach and that he had then moved to the spot where he was found under his own volition.

The coroner said that he did not think that John Hayes had received his injuries by falling from the sea wall and that he was satisfied that he had walked at least 160 feet from where a shoe was found.

An open verdict was returned.
